The Zoological Garden in Krakow was founded in 1929, it is located in the Wolski Forest on the Pustelnik Hill. Before the modern garden was established, there was a zoo in Wawel. There were, among others, monkeys, camels, lions, leopards and many rodents. When King Zygmunt III Waza moved the capital from Krakow to Warsaw, Zwierzyniec survived the fall. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries animals were created in various places in Krakow, e.g. in the Krakow Park. Activists of the Krakow Branch of the Nicolaus Copernicus - Ing. Wincenty Wober, director Kazimierz Maślankiewicz, Leon Holcer and dr Karol Łukaszewicz came up with the idea to place the zoo in Wolski Forest, next to the Camaldolese Monastery in Bielany. The garden was opened on July 6, 1929 in the presence of the President of the Republic of Poland, prof. Ignacy Mościcki. On the opening day, the zoo had 94 mammals, 98 birds and 12 reptiles. From the opening to 1966, the director of the ZOO was Antoni Koziarz. Currently, the ZOO in Krakow has 260 species - about 1500 animals. The garden area is 17 ha. The Krakow zoo is visited by over 300,000 annually. people. The director of the ZOO from 1975 to the present day is Dr. Józef Skotnicki. The garden is located 8 km from the center of Krakow. You can get here in about 15 minutes by public bus MPK No. 134 from the building of the former Hotel Cracovia.
