The abbey, located on a limestone hill on the Vistula River, was probably founded by Kazimierz I the Restorer in 1044. It happened after the crisis of the young state, caused by a pagan rebellion and Czech invasion. The Benedictines were to support the reconstruction of the state and the church. Aaron became the first abbot. However, some researchers believe that the Tyniec Abbey for Benedictines previously present in Krakow was funded only by the son of Casimir the Restorer, Bolesław II Szczodry. In the second half of the 11th century, a complex of Romanesque buildings was created - a three-nave basilica and monastery buildings. In the fourteenth century, the abbey was significantly destroyed as a result of an attack by Czechs and Tatars. In the following centuries, the entire complex was rebuilt several times, first in the Gothic style in the 15th century, and then in Baroque and Rococo. The abbey was destroyed by wars in the 17th century, but soon rebuilt and enlarged (including a library). Another destruction affected the monastery buildings in connection with turning them into a fortress of Bar Confederates. The reconstruction was made by Abbot Florian Amand Janowski. In 1816, the abbey was liquidated. In the years 1821-1826 the church was the seat of the Tyniec diocese with Bishop Grzegorz Tomasz Ziegler at the head. The monks, thanks to the initiative of the Belgian Benedictine Charles van Oost, returned to Tyniec in 1939 and from 1947 rebuilt the dilapidated complex. In 1968, the church of St. Peter and Paul again became an abbey. In the years 1821-1826 the church served as the cathedral of the Tyniec diocese. On May 8, 1991, Father Włodzimierz Zatorski founded the Benedictine Publishing House at the Abbey of TYNIEC. On January 14, 2006, the decree of Abbot Bernard Sawicki founded BENEDICITE Economic Unit of the Tyniec Abbey. At that time, the last stage of the reconstruction of the Tyniec Abbey began. The unit deals with selling products under the Benedictine Products brand. In July 2008, the so-called Great Ruin and the Benedictine Institute of Culture was created to protect the Good. The abbey museum houses the Tyniec Abbey Museum.
