The garden was founded in 1783 and is currently the oldest facility of this type in Poland. Established on the initiative of the National Education Commission as an auxiliary plant of the department of chemistry and natural history. It is located east of the Old Town, in Wesoła, at ul. Kopernika 27. Currently, it collects thousands of plant specimens covering an area of almost 10 ha. The Kraków botanical garden was created on the site of the garden of the Czartoryski family, bought in 1752 by the Jesuits. After the dissolution of the order, it was handed over to the National Education Commission, which, as part of the reform of the Krakow Academy, established a botanical garden as an auxiliary plant of the department of chemistry and natural history. The area, covering initially about 2.4 ha, was designed as a French baroque park, within which collections of medicinal and decorative plants were arranged. The university garden has about 5,000 species and varieties of plants from around the world, almost 1,000 species of trees and shrubs, and over 2,000 varieties of greenhouse plants. The park part of the arboretum garden gathers a collection of trees and shrubs and covers the largest area. The collection of woody plants has about 1000 species and varieties, the most valuable groups are maples and oaks. The "Jagiellonian Oak", which is around 230 years old, is particularly important here - Pedunculate oak Quercus robur. The area of the Botanical Garden is divided into sections: -Collections of tropical plants - Greenhouses -Victoria - the name comes from the Victoria Victoria amazonica growing in the pool -Jubilee - built on the occasion of the 600th anniversary - Jagiellonian University in 1964 -Holenderka - the name means type Greenhouses - Soil plants - Biblical plants - Arboretum - Plant systematics - Plant biology - Protected plants - Altarium - Medicinal and other useful plants - Ornamental plants - Aquatic plants The garden plays a big role in the development of Krakow's science, education and culture.
