The institution has been operating continuously since 1893. Is one of the most famous and most distinguished Polish stages. The historic theater building was built by Jan Zawiejski. Due to its performance artistry, it is one of the most valuable monuments of theater architecture in Europe. On the pediment there is an inscription: "Krakow's national art". The interiors of the building are decorated with frescoes by the Viennese artist Anton Tuch and the famous curtain of Henryk Siemiradzki. Next to the stage is the historic wardrobe of the great actor Ludwik Solski. The theater, surrounded by legend, already at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries served as a national stage. It was the birthplace of contemporary Polish directing, stage design, staging and acting. A generation of Young Poland artists debuted here - among them Stanisław Wyspiański.
