The Veit Stoss Altar in Krakow - the altar of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, actually the retable of the main altar of the St. Mary's Church in Krakow, also colloquially called the "St. Mary's Altar in Krakow", the "Krakow Altar of Veit Stoss" etc. is an altarpiece made in 1477–1489 by a sculptor from Nuremberg Veit Stoss (around 1448–1533) and his workshop in Kraków. The retabulum has dimensions of 11 × 13 m; the height of the largest figures is about 2.7 m. It is the largest Gothic altarpiece in Europe. The figures, of which there are over 200 in the altar, are carved from solid lime trees. The whole structure is made of oak, while the background is in larch. The predella shows the Jesse tree - the genealogical tree of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The wardrobe is decorated with four wings, two movable and two stationary. The pentaptic is completed with a finial. The Veit Stoss Altar, a work of the late Middle Ages, combines elements of the sacred and profane. Mysticism is mixed with naturalistic realism. Golden apostles' robes are found next to everyday clothing worn in medieval Krakow. Next to lofty religious scenes, life in his everyday life was depicted. The figure of the Madonna retains the ideal of medieval beauty, but Stoss gave the apostles of Cracow burghers the apostles. In his realistic approach to the character, he went so far that you can see their various disabilities: defects in appearance, deformed hands, swollen veins on the legs, traces of skin diseases. The main altar scene, located in the middle wardrobe, is the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Sleeping Virgin Mary is surrounded by apostles. The figure of the Mother of God and Saint John supporting her is cut from one trunk of linden wood, as are the figures of Christ, his mother and two angels in the scene of the Assumption. The open altar on movable wings illustrates the six joys of Mary: from the Annunciation to the Pentecost. When the wardrobe is closed, the reliefs depict 12 scenes from the life of Mary and Jesus. The characters are depicted in costumes from the period of the creation of the work (15th century), being now an excellent study of costume design. Household appliances, everyday utensils are also an exact copy of the original. In September 1939, prof. Karol Estreicher, wanting to protect the altar from destruction, dismantled the figures and floated them down the Vistula to Sandomierz with their shoulders. They were kept in the cathedral and the seminary. Thanks to the informer's report, the Germans found them and, after sawing the altar supporting structure (chest and wings), took it to Berlin in October of the same year. The sculptures were deposited in the basement of the Nuremberg castle, and the supporting structure at the Wiesenthau castle. Stored in moist basements, it was attacked by insects. He was found by prof. Estreicher with the help of the Americans, thanks to which the altar returned to Krakow by train in May 1946. Preserved in Wawel in 1946–1950, dedicated to St. Mary's Church in 1957.
