The fortification building is one of the greatest buildings of medieval military architecture in Europe. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the Barbican was an almost impregnable building. Only a few similar objects have survived in Europe, but the Krakow Barbican stands out significantly against them. It is a building with an extremely powerful, original structure, still preserved in very good condition. The Barbican was built in the years 1498 - 1499 to protect the northern section of the Kraków fortifications, devoid of a natural water dam. It is a building with an internal diameter of 24.4 m and walls with a thickness of 3 m. On three floors of the Barbican there are 130 shooting holes. It also has seven towers constituting excellent vantage points. There was once a deep moat around the stronghold, with a width of up to 26 meters. The bottom of the moat was lined with stone slabs, and water was supplied to it from nearby Rudawy. The Barbican also had two gates, one from today's Kleparz and the other leading to the Florian's Gate. The building was empty inside so that in case of danger one could gather a large army. Currently, the Barbican is a branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow and is open to the public. It is also used as an exhibition site for various exhibitions, as an arena for sports fights, or for historicized knights' fights and court dances.
