Address: ul. Lubicz 48 , 31-512 Kraków
The institution of the opera in Krakow was not established until 1954. Originally it was in a modest room of the Soldier's House and at ul. Lubicz 48. Its activity began with the premiere of Rigoletto Giuseppe Verdi. Due to the lack of its own seat, the opera performance venue was the Teatr im. J. Słowacki in Cracow. Despite organizational difficulties, as many as 250 premieres were staged at that time. The opera ensemble was then managed by Kazimierz Kord, Robert Satanowski and Krzysztof Missona, while well-known singers were Teresa Żylis-Gara, Jadwiga Romańska, Jadwiga Rappé, and Wiesław Ochman. The new, post-modern Opera building was created in 2004-2008 with the support of European Union funds, the assistance of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The ceremonial inauguration took place on December 13, 2008. It was the premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's The Devils from Loudun directed by Laco Adamik under the musical direction of Andrzej Straszyński. The Krakow Opera conducts a rich cultural and artistic activity, which obtains high marks and widespread recognition. Viewers from all over South Poland, as well as foreigners and tourists visiting the city of Krakow are eager to perform. The opera is characterized by great professionalism of the organizers and performers of performances. The Opera stage allows the realization of rich and dynamic productions, as it has a large surface area of 443 m² and modern equipment: 18 trapdays, 30 slides, 7 trolleys, hoisting devices for transporting decorations, 30 rope lifts, 2 curtain lifts; rotating stage and video projection equipment. The visual side of the show is enriched by light directed from 4 lighting bridges and movable towers.
