The Krakus Mound is one of the two oldest mounds in the area of Krakow. It is located in a fairly picturesque and clearly visible place, less than 2.5 kilometers south-east of Wawel, on a hill called the Rękawka hill. Right next to the neighboring lower Lasota hill is one of the oldest churches in this part of Krakow, the church of St. Benedict, built on the site of the original rotunda of the 10th century. Currently, the Krakus Mound is 57 meters in diameter and over 16 meters high, and the horizon from its top reaches several dozen kilometers. In the immediate vicinity lies the Lebanon quarry. Its great importance is evidenced by the fact that it is visible from the windows of the Wawel Castle to remind the rulers of the merits of their predecessor, King Krak. Legend has it that the Krakus Mound was erected as a grave for the late King Krak by his two sons in thanks for his services to the city of Krakow. In practice, however, there are many hypotheses regarding the creation of the mound. Currently, the Krakus Mound is the destination of many walks and has rather recreational functions.
