Along with the salt mine "Bochnia" from the thirteenth century to 1772 it was part of the Krakow Żupy enterprise. In 1976, entered in the national register of monuments. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the world-famous underground Tourist Route of the Wieliczka Mine was created (measuring 3 km in length and having 20 chambers, located at depths from 64 to 135 meters). About a million tourists from around the world visit it every year. The average travel time is 2-3 hours. The oldest chapel of the preserved underground chapels is the Chapel of St. Antoni (dedicated in 1698). It consisted of a presbytery, vestibule and nave, while it was made in the Baroque style. The chapel's dimensions are 7.5m long, 6m wide and 5.5m high. The beautiful arched portal and pillar arcade make a great impression. There are two side altars in the chapel: St. Peter of Alcantara and Saint. Casimir the Prince. In the vestibule you can admire the figures of St. Franciszek and Dominik. The Copernicus Chamber was established before 1785. Inside there is a sculpture made of salt, depicting the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. It is also worth seeing the pit of Kunegunda, created around 1829. It connects the chamber of Casimir the Great with the second level. Numerous forms of salt crystallization can be admired here, such as stalactites, stalagmites. Dwarf figurines are also standing here. Chapel of St. The cross is an example of a itinerant chapel. Miners could move equipment to other chambers closer to the place where they worked. Inside there are baroque wooden figures. Next to the altar are monks carved out of salt. People who want to see the image of the ruler of the Wieliczka undergrounds covering the collapsing pavement should go to the Treasury. According to miners, the spirit of the mine - Treasurer - watches over them and their work. It warns employees of dangers. The Vistula riverbed with the Antonia riverbed is connected by the Prinzinger slipway. These wooden stairs were made during World War I. The fate of the mine, tools and equipment for mining and transporting salt can be admired at the Krakow Saltworks Museum. In the Russegger chamber you can see the geology of salt deposits, formed 13.5 million years ago. The exhibition allows you to obtain interesting information on the richness of minerals and salt rocks. There are also crystallized wooden objects (watering can and broom) left by miners. The specifics of the past climate remind us of fossilized cones and corals, while the filament of grass embedded in a halite crystal can make guesses about the existence of meadows near the sea.
