Address: Wzgórze Zamczysko , 32-840 Melsztyn
The construction of the castle in Melsztyn began in 1347, on the initiative of the Krakow castellan Spicymir of the Leliwa coat of arms. In 1362, the Bishop of Kraków Jan Bodzenta erected the castle chapel dedicated to Saint. Spirit. The oldest part of the castle stood in the eastern part of the complex. From the fourteenth century to the beginning of the sixteenth century, the castle was the residence of the powerful family of Melsztyn Lelivites, including Spytka II from Melsztyn and Spytka III from Melsztyn. At that time, at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, a large Gothic keep was built in the western part, of which two walls have survived to this day. The castle in the 15th century was the center of the Hussite movement in Poland. In 1511, Jan Melsztyński sold the castle and its surrounding estates to the castellan of Wiślica Mikołaj Jordan from Myślenice. The castle was destroyed during the Bar Confederation when in 1770 it was first occupied by the Confederates, and later plundered and burned by the Russian army. It has remained in ruins since then.
