The museum was founded in 2009 on the basis of a collection of butterflies, owned by Jacek Kobiela. The oldest specimens presented in the facility come from the 1970s. The museum has the largest permanent exhibition of butterflies from around the world in Poland. Its rich collection has over 4,500 specimens of butterflies and other arthropods, including extinct species. The specimens come from the museum owners' journey to Europe, Africa and the Americas, and were also given to property or on deposit by other collectors. The museum's donors and depositors include such entomologists as: Edward Palik, Jerzy Turzański, Henryk Sudołowicz and Stanisław Gruszka. The arthropods presented in the museum come from all continents of the world. In addition to butterflies, the collection also includes beetles, frogs, bugs, mantis and cicadas.
