The building was erected by King Casimir the Great in the years 1350–1360 on the embankment within the city fortifications of Nowy Sącz. It belongs to the characteristic '' Castles on the Dunajec ''. In the past, the castle had two corner towers, a tower, a residential building and an outer bailey. The remains of the perimeter walls and the reconstructed Blacksmith Tower have survived to this day. Currently, there is a city park in the area surrounding the castle ruins. The castle was built in the fourteenth century in the north-west corner of the city was incorporated into the defensive system of the city walls. It was separated from the city by a moat and probably a wall with a gate. In those times it was the seat of the castellany, town office and castle governor.
