Address: Droga Wojewódzka 977 , 33-190 Ciężkowice

A nature reserve located on the right bank of the Biała River in the Ciężkowice Foothills. It is located at a distance of several hundred meters to 1 km from the center of Ciężkowice, on the ridge, as well as on the western and northern slopes of the Skała hill - 367 m. It is located in the city of Ciężkowice in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The name "Petrified City" comes from the legend saying that once there was a stronghold in this place, which for the sins of its inhabitants was turned into stone. Visiting the reserve is very convenient, due to the direct location by the provincial road No. 977. A blue tourist trail leads through the Petrified City. You can start visiting it from a convenient car park on the left side of the Tarnów - Ciężkowice - Gorlice road. Two of the rock outcrops: "Czarownica" and "Ratusz" are located on the right side of this road, on the Biała River, and they are reached by a special tourist viaduct over the road. Right next to the parking lot there is the "Grunwald" outcrop, all the other rocks are in the forest on the Skała hill and a hiking trail leads past them. In the further part, after passing the "Rock with a cross" leads to the Gorkowicki Gorge and the Witches Waterfall. In 1931 "Petrified City" was recognized as a natural monument. 30.49 ha were covered by protection. The reserve with an area of 14.91 ha was established by the Order of the Minister of Forestry and Wood Industry on July 12, 1974. Within it, we can distinguish four enclaves located close to each other. Legal protection covered a number of rock outcrops built of Ciężkowice sandstone. In the reserve you will find numerous rock forms with unique names, e.g. "Town Hall", "Lower Fortress" or "Pustelnia" that affect the impression that we are in a real settlement. It is worth adding that the rocks are covered with rare mosses and lichens.
